Somehow I have selected something, probably in settings, which has produced a 10mm diameter pale grey circle with a darker grey ring around it - it appears on every screen selected and can be moved around the screen; if tapped the home page appears - this appears to be its only function. I have looked through settings and cannot find any reference - how do I get rid of it

I have gone through all the settings again and made a few changes - and the disc has disappeared. Unfortunately I do not know which change worked. Problem solved.

Is it possible that you have installed some malware by chance? Go through your installed apps list at first, please.
