Oppo R1 announced: potent, pretty, and a penny pincher

Chinese manufacturers are fighting tooth and nail to get respect in the mobile industry right now and one of the leaders in this fight, Oppo, has officially announced another smartphone. The Oppo R1 sports an elegant design, good hardware, and a more of less unbeatable price. Hot on the heels on their recent release of the Oppo N1, this company is working towards becoming synonymous with quality Chinese products, much like the Huawei Ascend P6.

Along with the Ascend P6, the Oppo R1 seems to be taking design courses from the Apple iPhone with its sleek aluminum chassis. However, the design itself seems to be the only thing in which they resemble. Available right now in Chinese markets for the equivalent of about $410 US dollars as an unlocked device and it sports the Color interface over Android 4.2.2.

Technical Specs

Operating System Android 4.2.2 with Color OS
Display:  5-inch HD IPS, 1280 x 720 Pixel (294 ppi)
Processor: MediaTek MT6582, Quad-Core, 1.3 GHz
Memory 2 GB
Internal Storage 16 GB, non-expandable
Rear Camera 8 MP
Front Camera 5 MP
Battery 2410 mAh
Dimensions 142.7 x 70.4 x 7.1 mm
Weight 140 g

The R1 sports a pretty impressive rear camera with an F/2.0 aperture. The lower the number for the aperture, the more light that enters the sensor. So what does this translate to? Basically, the R1 should be able to take much better pictures in low light scenarios. However, just judging this on the hardware alone as we’ve seen how much software can come into play when trying to take photos. The only downside I can see is the fact that it has only 16 GB of internal storage with no options for expanding or upgrading it. Oh well.

There still is no word on whether the R1 will be released outside of the Asian market. However, with the recent release of the Find 5 and N1, we wouldn’t be too surprised.
